Three benefits of using social media:
  1. Facebook- Easier for people to connect with each other and find old friends. This is a positive effect as it can help people re-connect with people and track down old friends. Facebook also provides a messaging service that is easy to use, and is fast and reliable. Facebook also allows companies, celebrities, politicians and hobbyists to find each other online and easily communicate about things they are passionate about. For example, all it takes is one click to make sure that you are updated on everything Barack Obama posts on Facebook, as well as show other people you like the things being said.
  2. Twitter- Easier for people to find out more about the things and people they like. This is a positive because not only does it allow people to learn more about celebrities and famous people they like, but they can put out their personal thoughts and opinions and converse with people. Twitter also allows users to communicate with direct messaging as well as block anyone they don’t wish to recieve tweets or messages from. This is very easy to do.
  3. Instagram- Good for self image, and gaining feedback on photography skills. Can help budding photographers showcase their work and gain feedback to help them develop their photography skills. It is very easy for people to “follow” someone who’s pictures they enjoy, and be notified whenever they post another. Instagram also allows users to comment on pictures in order to better convey their thought and opinions on it.
Three problems with using social media:
1. Facebook - Can make it easier for cyber bullying to occur. And could potentially allow someone to find you in real life. People can find info about someone very easily through Facebook.
In 2015 a study carried out by the cyber bullying research center showed that 32..9 percent of the 457 11-15 year olds that they surveyed had been harassed in some way through Facebook. http://cyberbullying.org/2015-data/teen-tech-use-2015


2. Twitter - Could make it easier for someone to get harassed all at once by a large audience. This has happened many times with celebrities and people who have suffered a tragedy of some kind.

3. Tinder - You have no way of verifying what someone says is true, there is a minimal amount of information on display and this could cause some people to be lied to and reveal personal information. (being catfished)

Commercial uses for social media products





















Advertising - Social Media makes it much easier for companies to build up a persona behind their product and sell to their target audience more effectively. For example Online games like League of Legends place advertisements on Facebook, that are targeted towards people who like video games. They also have a Facebook page that people can like to receive updates about the game.


Viral marketing - This means that information about the company’s goods will be more easily available, allowing the company to build up a rapport with their audience. For example Doritos has an official twitter that they use to promote their product through competitions, giveaways and celebrity collaboration. They regularly engage directly with their consumers on Twitter in an effort to seem more compassionate about them and bolster their companies image. This encourages customers to speak positively about the company and thus the positive feedback spreads through word of mouth between customers.


Product/service reviews - Makes it much easier for consumers to compare information about a company's products. For example, there are large channels on Youtube that specialise in reviewing videogames and giving first impression playthroughs. To help consumer figure out whether or not to buy it.

My social media site development plan

Title: D-Pad

Purpose: 
To help gamers meet other likeminded individuals and forge friendships with them.

Style: Will be structured very similarly to facebook(see site map).

Content: Website/smartphone app 
Will allow users to exchange information of the games they play and also meet others who play them.
Will also allow users to post screenshots, clips and stats from the games they play.

Target Audience: 
16-35 year old males, predominantly caucasian but not exclusively.
People in middle to high income households.
People living within the EU.

Production plan:










Revenue:
My website will take a very similar approach where revenue is concerned, ad presence will be fairly constant in the site. This means that companies' ads are guaranteed to get decent exposure to the users. 
My social media site is about games, and this means that in practical terms i have limited my site to advertising companies about gaming. 

This doesn't mean that these are the only companies who will advertise on my site, but it does mean that it's less likely to find companies that are outside this sphere and still willing to advertise here.
